A good but simple way to add some personality to a living room, or any room of the house for that matter, is to make use of an upholstered chair.  These chairs are generally reasonable in price and many models can be had for around $120.  But their effect on a room can be disproportionate to their cost, as an upholstered chair can change the mood of a room to be more upbeat and whimsical, or conversely to be more sober and formal.  The chair is the single most scrutinized item of furniture as their are so many design variables and variations, and a good chair must strike a balance between comfort and pleasing proportions.
When getting an upholstered chair for the living room, you obviously want the chair to match with the rest of your living room decor.  However, there is a bit more freedom of choice here as the the chair merely needs to be compatible with the overall color and design scheme of the living room and doesn’t have to match it exactly.  The upholstered chair is a sort of individual in the living room, part of but not identical to the other members of the group of living room furniture.  As a matter of fact, you could say it is this very uniqueness that brings out a different quality in the room and spices it up.
There are limits to this freedom, of course.  It’s a good idea to stay within the same category of design.  For instance, you wouldn’t want to put a modern chair in amongst your antique living room furniture as that would be a very bad clash.  Colors should be compatible as well.  But with the exception of these general limitations, you can achieve some very interesting effects with a simple upholstered chair.  Starting with the least subtle, a zebra striped chair could fit in a living room that is predominantly black and white.  This would obviously take some courage, but the chair could end up being the furniture that ties together the whole room.
Another way to get playful with an upholstered accent chair is to focus on materials.  Perhaps a chair upholstered in canvas would be an interesting foil to your leather sofa?  Then again, perhaps a leather chair would be just the thing you need to make your canvas upholstered sofa more exciting?  These are just some of the many possibilities.  Be guided by the general guidelines, and have fun choosing that special chair for your living room.
