Buying a Real Leather Sofa for Your Home

Everyone knows that leather furniture is associated with class and luxury.  But did you know that there are actually many types of leather, and that some of these fall far short of this reputation?  While the real, quality leather is very durable and reasonably easy to care for, much of what passes for leather these days is not what most people think of when they think ‘leather’.  Therefore, it pays for the prospective buyer of a leather sofa do some research to allow for an educated decision.
Most people think that all “real leather” is the same, but nothing could be further from the truth.  In terms of quality leather, what you usually want is the stuff that is a byproduct of the beef industry- an inhumane industry that is in desperate need of reform.  If you’ve made up your mind to buy leather, this will be the leather that will be the most durable.  Besides the less than desirable circumstances under which such leather is produced, leather actually offers many benefits over other materials.  For one, it will be more health friendly as it is a natural material that usually will not have been impregnated with too many toxic chemicals.  It will wear well and hold up to much longer use than most fabrics, and it will probably look beautiful as well.
There are other disadvantages to leather, too.  It can be slippery, especially when you first buy it.  Also, leather can feel pretty cold in the wintertime and hot in the summertime, depending on its exposure to these temperature extremes.  And of course, leather is expensive.  Well, usually quality leather is, anyway.  That’s why you need to beware of lower grades of leather.  These days, it’s more common to find leather than has been blended with synthetic materials such as the very toxic PVC.  There are also many completely synthetic fake leathers being used for so-called “leather sofas” today- be careful to make sure that what you think is leather, really is!  Another tactic that manufacturers use is to use pigskin or goatskin for their sofas.  It can be almost impossible to tell which is which, so you may have to ask.  Remember that you get what you pay for- if a leather sofa seems to be too cheap to be real quality leather, it probably is.
Though the most common choices in this category are the leather corner sofa, leather sofa bed, black leather sofa and the brown leather sofa, designs and the types of real leather used will differ.  You can choose from nubuck leather, corrected grain leather, double thickness leather, and much more.    However, most people will probably settle on a design that is pleasing to the eye and not worry too much about the specific leather used.  Just make sure that whatever choice you make, make certain that you are okay with the material you are getting.  If it’s real leather you want, make sure it’s real leather.
